This past Wednesday was one of those days where I found myself with some extra free time. As I was closing my front door to head to work, I received a text from my boss that truck wouldn’t be going out… back in the house I went. I called my step-mother she told me enjoy myself and pick Marlowe up later. I twiddled my thumbs for a bit, responded to a few emails, did some dishes, and met a friend for coffee. When I came home, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: make bread. I’ve been slowly getting over my fear of dough. I even made dumplings the other night! I peeked at a few recipes, and found one for very basic focaccia. I made a quick batch of carrot soup, and while I let the carrots caramelize, I turned on my mixer and started baking away. The dough needed forty five minutes to rise. It was just the perfect amount of time to drive out west, pick up Marlowe, drive home, and finish my bread. My timer went off just three minutes after coming home. Perfect. I asked Marlowe if she wanted to help, she very eagerly said yes. She helped me puree the soup, season it with a few more pinches of salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. And she did a wonderful job helping me take the pestle to the mortar, making the perfect garlic herb oil for our bread. I brushed on the oil, she topped with sweet, red, and green onion. Twenty five minutes later we set up a music station, set a plate of bread to snack on, and created a band, calling ourselves “bread and soul”. It was a great afternoon.

&of course: our dinner!
carrot soup, topped with our micro veggies! (they grew! we did it!), and a first time success: focaccia!

I never made it to the gym yesterday. And I didn’t really make it out after my second shift of work, either. Two drinks and I found myself: back home, in bed early, to get (for the first time, in a VERY long time) eight solid hours of (the weirdest dreams ever) sleep. Happy Friday, everyone. Have a fantastic weekend!

  1. Where to start… I love how you say you threw together a quick batch of carrot soup. That would probably not be quick (or easy) for me. I really get a feel for the day you had from the way you wrote this. I think it's great too that you are exposing Marlowe to music early on.

  2. I've been making my own bread for a few months, but prior to that I was a total doughphobic too. I flat out refused to make anything that called for yeast. So glad I got over it though, and glad you have too! There's nothing quite like hot, fresh, home made bread.

  3. mmm i think your next food post should be on that carrot soup & your bread recipe! looks so good.

  4. Oh man, looks delicious, especially with that carrot soup!

Also, I think Bread and Soul is a great band name.

    • I really just googled "focaccia" and used a combination of the first two i found. For the topping: I smashed up lots of garlic, herbs, salt, and oil, spread it on, and topped it with onions and more herbs πŸ™‚

  5. That bread looks delicious! I love to make bread in my thrifted brand-new bread machine πŸ™‚ It's cheating but it makes the house smell so good!
