Every once in a while I get these awful, awful migraines. I haven’t been able to pinpoint what triggers them quite yet, but I’m working on it… it’s a weird and not party filled mystery game if you ask me. (And honestly, they’re most likely from processed sugar, but again, I’m unsure.) Well, like any migraine that someone comes across, they seem almost incurable… even with tylenol, ibuprofen, etc.

No, this little natural ‘remedy’ may not cure headaches or migraines, but I can tell you, this makes them a whole lot more bearable. (Also note I said may not, but who knows, maybe it will!) Honestly, I don’t even have a headache and I’m tempted to do it right now just because of how nice it is. It’s like an instant head vacation, if you ask me. There are a few ways to do it. It only takes a few seconds of your time to prepare and then a few minutes…. or an hour if you can entertain (and trust) the kids that long. If you can lay down longer, kudos to you, that would be some major head relief relaxation time!

Two options: One option is to simply dampen a cloth with cool water and drop a few drops of peppermint oil on the cloth before laying down and placing the damp cloth on your forehead. Make sure to cover your eyes and a bit of your nose too, to breathe in the scent. Lay down, breathe in and out and enjoy.

The second option you’ll need to use a carrier oil, either coconut oil, almond oil, or even olive oil. Put a dab in the center of your palm, put a few drops of the peppermint oil, rub in your finger tips and massage your temples. Or even better—-  have someone else massage them for you 😉 then again, place a damp (cool) cloth on your forehead and breathe the peppermint scent in and out for as long as you’d like or can.

Also: you could also try lavender oil or roman chamomile oil, for a calming effect, but for me, the refreshing lightness of peppermint (or even spearmint) does the trick.

Super basic, easy peasy, ‘why haven’t I tried this before’ thought inducing, right? Try it out if you get headaches or migraines and let me know how it feels 🙂 Like I said, it won’t cure a migraine or anything, but I assure you, it’ll feel damn nice while having one. I think you’ll thank me 😉

  2. I get headaches pretty frequently and I've been meaning to look into essential oil cures and just keep forgetting. This sounds like a nice way to relax at the end of the day, and that's often when I realize just how bad my headache is. Definitely will give it a try!

    I don't get real headaches… just occasionally sinus ones towards the end of a cold (right now) but I might try this as a relax/quasi-meditation type thing.

    • I double the acu comment! I've been going for almost two years now to help combat my migraines (I was having headaches about 50% of the time) and it has done wonders! I take some herbal and mineral supplements to help as well and I feel so much better overall. I even tried the Western medicine route first and all the drugs the Neurologist prescribed wreaked havoc on my body. I can't recommend acupuncture enough if you can afford it! One of those amazing things that most insurances don't cover. 🙁 Good luck!

  7. Great tips! Not sure if you eat soy, but just in case… when I first went vegan I ate/drank soy and got lots of headaches. I learned it could be from soy, cut it out, and was a headache free new woman. Otherwise you're probably right about it being sugar.

    • We are almost soy free! not purposely, we just don't have a lot of it. Just occasional tofu. It's gotta be sugar. I get minor headaches after ANY sugar. and then the migraines were super bad on my chocolate binge last week.

  9. Great! I must definitely try this! Whenever I'm tired or stressed or I passed too much time in front of my computer I have terrible headaches. So far I've been using these gel pads that you can freeze or heat (it's like magic for tired muscles) but the feeling of the frozen bag and the plastic smell is not what you'd call "appealling" or "cozy"… Thanks for this idea!!

  10. I do this as well! I recently learned to make sure the oils I buy are 100% essential oil. Most oils purchased at typical stores are a diluted with water and alcohol. Using 100% essential oil works so much better for home remedies.

  11. Oh man I hate migraines…I have had two to three times a year since I was thirteen and I want to die every time. I will for sure give this a try. I haven't found any triggers either 🙁

  12. Have you ever tried Tiger Balm?! It's a menthol rub from Singapore. You can find it in any Chinatown. It's such a good headache reliever!

  13. Lily was getting migraines for a while and yes, i am almost 100% sure that it was from processed sugar. i have cut them out of her diet and since then, no more migraines. i did find that lavender was helpful and so was lemongrass. they were also really helpful with car sickness too 😉
