A first time: eyebrow threading! I highly recommend it. Speaking of hair removal: I do not recommend ever putting nair on your underarms. do not do not do not. I’m still in pain, one week later.

If you like trying weird stuff (which neither of the other girls did :/ thanks party poopers), then I recommend a steamed turnip cake. It’s kind of gelatinous, warm, and the taste is similar to instant mashed potatoes.

&jennie, a once upon a time neighbor in Miami.

I don’t get to see much of my friend Katie these days. We haven’t lived in the same state in for-ev-er. We wanted to make up for this whole Massachusetts thing being cut short, by taking a quick day trip for just the two of us. Also, I knew this would most likely be my last big adventure without a toddler in tow (for a fair amount of time) so I took full advantage of my mom’s gracious babysitting offerings 😉 We woke up early on Thursday morning (…okay, well, not that early… I accidentally overslept and woke at fifteen past eight. oops) &drove two hours south to the train station in New Haven, CT. We boarded the train and spent another two hours looking up restaurants and trying to somewhat plan a day. We arrived at grand central, met up with the absolutely adorable LaTonya, and ventured out into the city. We made a conscious decision to be some of the slowest walkers in NYC and stroll, stroll, stroll around town. Like a toddler, I beelined a few times off course, without letting anyone know, to whatever caught my eye (ahem: eyebrow threading, kombucha, sunglasses… you know: fun stuff). We got dim sum in China Town, searched for gifts, sat in the park, and then made our way to Brooklyn to meet up with some long lost Florida friends of mine. We took a ferry ride, meandered around a very familiar and memory filled (for me) park, took the most nerve-wracking ferry ride back, and headed out for more food and drinks. We met up with another long lost Miami friend of mine, bar hopped a bit more, and ended our New York adventure with pizza by the slice, right before making the four hour commute back home. It was such a beautiful, perfect, and unplanned day with so many people I love. And while I do joke, that I feel relatively neutral about New York, I do miss it from time to time. Each time I visit is better than the last. My last visit to New York, was a quick two and half day adventure with Alex, a whole three years ago, not very long before I got pregnant with Marlowe. Three years, it has been too long! I wish I could have one more day like this before this upcoming trip, but changes are happening now!, and New York will still be there, years from now, when I’m ready again.
See ya later, New York.
&a few more (of the same) photos on my flickr too.

  1. Looks like a fantastic trip! I haven't been to NYC in 10 years but I have a good excuse, I live in Sweden 🙂

  2. so fun!! you made me miss nyc. i think i need to visit Connie soon again…
also, be careful with threading. my good friend caught a horrible bacteria infection from threading at a good spa and still has scars on her face.

  3. You must have been exhausted for your trip home! It's amazing how much you did in one day :). Thanks for sharing!

  4. I feel neutral about NYC as well, but I very much want to go back to see if I can change that. Thanks for the inspiration 🙂

  5. Hey- you were in my neck of the woods (I live about 20 minutes away from New Haven). Looks like you guys had a great trip – I love girls days in the city.
