ohdeardrea vegan bodycareHi! So I know that not all of you are vegan… actually I’m 99.9% sure most of you are not! πŸ™‚ BUT, I do receive a lot of questions about what vegan/natural products I use and thought I would do a post about some of my favorites. I’m not trying to convert any of you guys to veganism or convince you that vegan products are better, in fact if you know me in real life then you know I do the exact opposite of that! πŸ˜‰ BUT if you’ve been shopping around for new body and beauty care products for you or your little ones, then hopefully these options will inspire you to try some of the really wonderful cruelty-free products that are available! :)Want more information?
check out THIS POST on all the natural products I use daily and make often.
A post about my hair.Β
I make my own deodorant
and bug spray too!
and the lotion I make for pimple days.

notes:
There are a lot of ways to find out what products are vegan and cruelty-free. One of the most commonly used logos is the side profile of a bunny. Another is the face of a bunny. I’ve always seen a plant with a “V” for vegan. Some products will just state: “cruelty-free”, “vegan”, “not tested on animals and no animal bi-products”. If you can’t find any of these logos or statements, the best thing to do is: ASK! Both Whole Foods and Sephora (where many of these products have been purchased) have well trained staff that know their products pretty well, and have been great to help me find new products to try. And of course, I’m sure many other places will have equally as helpful staff. Most places will carry at the very least, a small selection of cruelty-free products. Smaller natural health-food stores are always a great option, Whole Foods has a ridiculous selection of natural products to try… and many of these baby and body care products (maybe not as many cosmetics) can even be purchased at chains such as: target, walmart, walgreens, and your neighborhood supermarket (public here).

  1. Just so you know, Pureology is owned by Loreal, which tests heavily on animals. So even though Pureology may say it does not, by buying it you are supporting Loreal, which is one of the worst companies when it comes to animal testing, and just plain evil. This is not meant to sound catty or rude, just sharing information. Knowledge is power.

  2. Thanks for sharing as I am also from Florida and natural products in Florida heat fail. I made the homemade deodorant, and it has been working great.
By chance, do you have any friend's that have curly hair that can recommend products to keep the frizz at bay for the summer?

    • this is so old now, but I don't really. All my curly haired friends are northerners— besides alex— who uses straight up hair grease (unhelpful)

  3. Thanks for sharing. It is great to read someone's blog that also comes from Florida because with our summer temperature some natural products fail.
I made the deodorant about a week ago, and I love it. I look forward to making the moisturizer this week. By chance do you have any friend's that have blogs or can comment on what natural products they have found to keep frizz at bay in Florida?

  4. love anything and everything desert essence. I haven't been as happy with Jason products. We use all gluten free and vegan products around here and I love them so much more than regular products. I didn't know alba made a sunscreen, I'll have to check that out! Thanks:)

  5. LUSH deodorant is amazing! Aromaco and coconut deodorant power are my favorites! LUSH does not do any animal testing whatsoever and over 87% of their products are vegan

  6. Hey Drea! Looking at this page for more diy all natural skin care options. Wanted to share with you my Oil Cleansing Method for skincare which has worked WONDERS for me. You can customize to your own skyin type but I do a blend of castor oil, sunflower oil, & jajoba.

and this post on a diy all natural brown sugar exfoliator:
    http://www.mummascorner.com/2012/03/homemade-brown-sugar-exfoliator.html
Let me know if you get to try them, I think you'd really like them!
Am going to try making my own deodrant and moisturizer soon so I will let you know how those go!

  7. I recently learned of Sheswai nail lacquers. They're a little pricey, but formaldehyde, dbp, and toluene free. http://bit.ly/HplpdY
I, too, am always looking for a good natural deodorant, but haven't found one I like. Maybe I'll try the Malin and Goetz mentioned above.

  8. I make my own deodorant! {coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder and tea tree oil.} It's easy, inexpensive, works really well and lasts forever! – S

  9. I love the Kiss My Face Liquid Rock Peaceful Patchouli for deodorant. But I also love patchouli probably as much as you love tea tree.

    • Hahah yeah I think patchouli and Tea Tree are scents thats people either LOVE or HATE. I kind of love-hate both of them.

  10. thank you for this post! I love natural products, and if they're vegan, that's even better! about a month ago I began washing my hair with a baking soda and water solution, and using an apple cider vinegar and water solution as a conditioner. sounds kinda wild but i've never been happier with a store bought shampoo or conditioner than I am using these simple products. my hair is healthier than its ever been!

    • I've always been curious to try it for my hair, but always hesitated. Maybe one day I'll get adventurous πŸ™‚

  11. I use Trader Joe's unscented deodorant with cotton. I'm sure it still has some bad stuff it in it but it is aluminum free and it's pretty cheap. It doesn't really keep you completely dry but it does prevent you from being stinky.

I've tried virtually ever other natural deodorant out there and have never been impressed. Tom's breaks me out so bad!

    • We don't have Trader Joes here, but I'll ask my brother to bring down a tube when he returns from Massachusetts next week! I also didn't like toms!

      πŸ™‚ Thanks!

  12. I use the crystal for deodorant and then dab some of my favorite oils, like a bit of patchouli mixed with vetiver and ginger, or just patchouli and lavender, on my armpits for extra protection.

I'm in South Texas and it works, so perhaps it will work for you!

    • Crystal as in salt? Cause if you mean salt, I've tried it and it failed my stinky body πŸ™‚

  13. aw this subject is near and dear to my heart. i'm a bodycare buyer for a whole foods in tennessee so i see most of this stuff every day! we don't carry anything that isn't cruelty free, so you don't have to worry about that!
hugo naturals is a great line to go to for vegan products, it says so right on the front. i LOVE their lotion, and their scrubs. when the owner comes in the store he is constantly eating his products, because they are all food grade and safe! he has a baby line too, but i've never tried it. their deodorant is really great, it even keeps my drive because it has rice powder in it, it is a little pricey though. I used to always get this:
    http://oyinhandmade.com/funk-butter-natural-deodorant-1.html
and it works so awesome and i feel like it was vegan, though I can't find an ingrediant list right now. i only stopped buying it when i got my current job and all the samples. haha. california baby makes nice sun screen, but it is pretty pricey. and i am obsessed with the kiss my face shave stuff, so amazing!

    • That is so fun! I want to be a body care buyer! I will def. look into Hugo. I don't think I've tried any of it yet. I will look into the deodorant!

  14. i love the california baby line for my daughter…and it's nice that i can pick some up at target. however, i am definitely going to look into the live clean baby line. it's always nice to have options πŸ™‚

    • The whole live clean baby is great. We've tried it all. My favorite really is the "baby bath" though. I want t drag marlowe in my bed and make her cuddle with me afterwards.

  15. A really good deodorant you can make at home is equal parts cornstarch and baking soda. Add a few drops of antibacterial oil like tea tree or lavender. Store air tight. It smells pretty good. πŸ˜‰

    • Baking soda works for everything, doesnt it? I'm going to def. have to try making some!

    • I've been vegan for four years or so and only transitioned all my products about a year ago. Slow is a-okay πŸ™‚

  16. I use Toms unscented do! I have no idea if I smell I hope not but it's a running joke with my friends that I probably stink:)) I love Cali baby sunscreen go swimming all the time and he's never been burned! I love dr bonners for soap and castille soap. Use mostly natural make up and aveda for hair. Baking soda and vinegar are bought in mass quantities I clean love them both! Thanks for post love this topic and no one ever wants to discuss

    • Also love Bronners and Castile soaps! You feel SO clean after using them! I tried Toms, and I def. still stink-stank-stunk. But like I said, I'm extra smelly…. I'm sure you're fine πŸ™‚

  17. I actually make my own deodorant like another user posted. I've been using it for 3 years. I live in the Midwest and it works for me. It is not an antiperspirant, but it does contain the smell very well! I use the recipe found here: http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2010/02/homemade-all-natural-deodorant.html

I've been vegetarian for 10 years but didn't switch all my products until a few years ago. I started breaking out in full body hives everytime I used a product for an extended period of time, including my face and neck. I even went so far as to see an allergist because it was getting ridiculous. They said the only thing they found was an allergy to Balsam of Peru, whatever the heck that is. The only ingredient in common with all the products I was using was Lauryl/Laureth sulfates (which was not done on an allergy test). I no longer buy any items containing it (including hand soap) for myself and my daughter has never used them. I ran out of shampoo and used an old bottle on hand for about 3 weeks. I started breaking out in hives during every single shower. I don't know if a sulfate allergy exists, but I'm convinced I have it! haha.

Here is what we use and love:

    BABY
Sunscreen– California Baby. NEVER had a burn in 3 years!
Soap/shampoo– California Baby (the family size bottle lasted TWO YEARS for one child!)
Lotion– California Baby. I actually don't like this at all, so I might try out the one you suggested!
Toothpaste– Kiss My Face Berry toothpaste- with fluoride. I'm still on the fence with my thoughts on flouride, so for now we use it. We've also used Tom's of Maine strawberry fluoride free and enjoyed that as well.

    MOM
Lotion– Nature's Gate. I agree that it is not the best, but I'm content with it so I haven't switched since I found it two years ago.
Shampoo & conditioner– Yes to Carrots. I have no idea if it is vegan, but it is mostly natural items listed on the label. I think it smells really great and it works awesome with my hair.
Toothpaste– I switch around alot.. I haven't found one I enjoy.
    Soap– Locally made vegan bar
Mouthwash– JASON Orange, Cinnamon, Mint Nature's Smile and LOVE it. It's concentrated, so it lasts for a while.
Handwash– we use Dr. Bronner's for all our hand soaps.

    Great post!

    • It does sound like you're allergic to Laurly/Laureth. It's in SO many non natural products. But it's good you figured it out!

I'm def. going to have to try to make some deodorant.

And we also use Dr. Bronners and LOVE it. Have it on both sinks πŸ™‚

    • Not that thorough πŸ˜‰ I do eat honey if it's in things and own a few leather items πŸ™‚ But I do what I can, when I can πŸ™‚

And pureology IS the best! I love their dandruff conditioner too. Smells so good.

  18. My sister is vegan and swears by the body shop for deoderant. It has no aluminum either.

  19. Awesome post! I'm in no way Vegan-total meat-eating-leather-wearing-fool. That being said, I do beleive in vegan products when it comes to beauty. No need to put extra chemicals on your body and I detest animal testing. Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions to add to my regimine and Emi's! And you're so right about a good bottle of shampoo lasting forever. Once I converted to "expensive" shampoo I was a goner!

  20. I'm one of your vegan readers out there, so I appreciate this post. I'm actually wearing the SpaRitual "hunk of burnin' love" right now on my toes! It's a nice orange-red.

  21. For an awesome natural deodorant, try "Green Body Basics" in sensual scent!! It seriously works – my husband, who is an er nurse and on his feet for 12 hour shifts daily, uses it and is never stinky! πŸ™‚ The only downside is that it is only sold at an online retailer called Itsy Bitsy Bums…the upside of that is that IBB is a natural parenting/cloth diaper shop and you very well might find other things you could use there. It used to be sold on Hyena Cart, but the maker had some kind of computer issue and now just sells through IBB. Hope that helps!

  22. Thank you so much for this post, I have always been interested in a 'better for you' nail polish!

    • I haven't looked too much into nail polishes, but this one doesn't seem to bad… and it does work great and the colors are fantastic πŸ™‚

  23. About your sunscreen… does it look white or greasy? I use California Baby sunscreen on Adelaide (don't know if it's vegan or not though), and at first it looks a little greasy but seems to "settle" after a little while.

    Thanks!!!

    • A little bit. But not overly. It's not the obnoxious kind you have to spend 5 minutes rubbing in! I believe all of the california baby line is vegan, but I could be wrong πŸ™‚

  24. I've been using "homemade deodorant" for almost a year now and while it doesn't keep me from sweating, it definitely takes care of the smell! I live in TX and we went thru 100+ days of 100+ temps last summer. Here's the recipe I use http://www.abirdandabean.com/2010/05/homemade-deodorant.html. I don't add any additional scent. I'm totally okay with the subtle coconut "scent".

    • Thanks a few people posted about homemade deodorants! I had never heard of it! I guess I must try it!

  25. I, too, live in the intense heat of the Florida sun, but I have found a natural deodorant that works for me. It's Crystal roll on deodorant made from mineral salts, my favorite is the pomegranate. http://store.thecrystal.com/crystal-roll-on-deodorants-c6.aspx
Now I'm not saying that it will last all day if you're sweating a lot, but I've worn it to workout, on the beach, and it works pretty darn good!

    • I think I've tried it actually! I've tried a few of the salt ones! My SIL uses them and does great with them, but me? I smell bad. Thanks πŸ™‚

  26. Great post. Handy to know about nail polish….that's the one thing i use that is not natural/vegan. I will see if i can get it over here. We are a natural (veggie, not vegan) beauty/cleaning house. And a paper free one too like you…again except from toilet roll! We wash all cleaning cloths and i use washable cloths instead of baby wipes for stanley too. We really like jason products we have the large pump shower gel and i use their deodorant…it's good….but it's never that hot over here! The other lines i like are weleda, origins, and green people (but i think that is a UK brand?). Maybe one of those will do a good deodorant for you? I think the thing to point out is although some of these products are more money they last forever because unlike un-natural products the main ingredient isn't water! You'd be amazed when you start looking to see that most ingredients list 'aqua' as their first ingredient. You are paying for it to be diluted which is why you end up using so much.
    http://usa.weleda.com/
    http://www.greenpeople.co.uk/
    http://www.origins.com/index.tmpl

    • I feel like I tried the Jason's deodorant, but I'm not sure. I've tried a fair amount of them a long, long time ago. I'll be sure to look into the other ones! Thanks Sarah! I love you and Stanley πŸ™‚

  27. Fantastic post. I'm not vegan, but over the last year I've been trying to make the switch over to natural beauty products. Not just for myself, but for our baby to be (whenever we manage to conceive!). One of the other blogs I read was talking about all the chemicals in our day to day beauty products which can be potentially harmful to our unborn babies, and it really scared me!

As for deo, I have tried a few and you're right, they aren't that great. So far my favourite would have to be this one http://www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk/product/4083/calendula-blossom-natural-deodorant-spray/ but it doesn't stop you from sweating, just gives off a lovely scent. I live in Scotland, not Florida… so my need probably isn't as great as yours! But it does seem to hold up even after 2 hours of aerobics classes.

    • It's true! I wanted to link the consumer warning or whatever it's called with the lists of all the harmful chemicals in products, but I don't know where to find it. A few friends posted it on Facebook, but I no longer have Facebook! Bummer. But yeah, all natural especially when pregnant is very key. πŸ™‚

  28. Bubble and Bee Deodorant was the FIRST natural DO that actually worked for me. I'm currently in Germany and it gets HOT here in the summer wih no A/C. πŸ™‚

    Awesome post!

  29. My sister in law makes her own line of holistic skin care products! I've used them and have liked everything I've tried, especially the grape fruit face wash, lavender elixir, and mud mask πŸ™‚ You can view and shop her line at http://www.breezypinesfarm.com!

She also has tons of other natural remedies πŸ™‚

    • I didn't switch to vegan products for a while after becoming vegan. I slowly transitioned into everything as the products I had ran out… not knowing what to use or what would work best. It's so nice to have FINALLY after years of being vegan made the full switch πŸ™‚ Happy vegan shopping!
